SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
PORTLAND, MAINE
The Portland School Committee
seeks an outstanding leader for Maine’s largest school district. Portland is a vibrant, progressive community
with many cultural offerings and recreational opportunities located on
beautiful Casco Bay. Our district is
the most diverse in the state, drawing students speaking more than 50 languages
from countries all over the world. We
have a $90 million budget, 1,200 staff members, 7,500 students in kindergarten
through 12th grade and 5,000 adult education students.
The Portland School Committee seeks a
candidate who has demonstrated experience in:
- addressing the needs of a diverse student
population, maintaining high academic standards, promoting equity and the
narrowing of achievement gaps and recognizing and fostering programs of
excellence
- leading,
guiding and directing the administrative, instructional, and support
services teams in setting and achieving the highest standards of
excellence in educational programs and operating systems
- overseeing and administering the use of all
facilities, property, and funds in the best interests of students and the
school system
- innovative and creative personnel programs including
compensation, benefits, supervision and evaluations
- school finance, including budget development and
management. Ability to effectively
communicate with the board, staff community and local municipal
officials. Clear understanding of
federal, state and local funding issues
- stimulating and reflecting community needs/wants
regarding education. Demonstrates
ability to involve the community in developing and implementing
goals. Views the community/school
relationship as a partnership.
Qualifications
- Meet or exceed the
requirements for a Superintendent Certificate as established by Maine Law.

- Masters Degree in
Educational Leadership/Administration or Equivalent.
