East End Community School (EECS)
Lottery Process
March 2006
A lottery and wait list will be utilized for students wishing to enter
the EECS grades Kindergarten through grade 5. This lottery is designed to assure
a fair and equitable selection process. We are committed to ensuring that the
EECS be representative of the City of Portland.
The Process:
- Applicants organized by grade level.
- Determine slots open by grade level.
- Begin with grade 5 (proceed with grade 4, grade 3, grade 2, grade 1, to
grade K).
- If numbers below open slots - accept all and accept all siblings - and
remove siblings name from drawing - add to list.
- If numbers of applicants listed in a grade are above the numbers of open
slots, names go into a lottery. All names are drawn and listed in the order
they are drawn. By the order listed, students will be placed in open slots.
- After students placed in the open slots, determine who has siblings -
then place siblings in appropriate list - if there is room. If no room for
sibling, student is placed on 1st available slot on wait list.
- All names on list, after open slots are filled, remain on the wait list
in the order chosen for that school year.
- Wait lists will be activated whenever an opening occurs and parents will
be notified and offered the placement. Should they refuse, the next person
on list will be notified. (If a sibling on one wait list is accepted, other
siblings may not be able to be accepted - but will remain on wait list of
appropriate grade level until an opening occurs.)
- Once lottery is completed - with all names drawn and placed on a list, parents
will be notified of their child's status.
