Imagine if third graders mapped their city and then watercolored their maps and combined them with all their classmates into one mega map mural. Over the last two years, third graders from seven classrooms at the Howard C. Reiche and East End community schools participated in a Side x Side mapping program where they helped make amazing mosaic murals with geographer and teaching artist Molly Brown. On Friday, Dec. 1, Side x Side will be exhibiting and selling 11"x14" prints and notecards of all seven map murals. Visit the studio at 636 Congress Street from 6-8 p.m. to view this special exhibit!

11" x 14" prints: $20 unframed, $50 framed

4.25" x 5.5" notecards: $4 each or $15/pack of 7

All proceeds support Side x Side K-5 programming in the Portland Public Schools.

Prints and notecards make great last-minute stocking stuffers and teacher gifts! To purchase in advance of the exhibit, email: info@sidexsideme.com

About the maps:

The Side x Side Mapping Portland program led by teaching artist Molly Brown was created for third graders to tie into their classroom study of the history of Portland. The program began with students using journals to capture their learning on historic Portland landmarks through writing and drawing. They then drew maps of Portland neighborhoods and painted them with watercolor. Molly Brown cut out sections of the student's maps and pieced them together to make one large Portland map for each classroom. The resulting whimsical, colorful maps capture the city of Portland and its many historic landmarks.
