With grant funding from the Music Theater International, King Middle School will present the award-winning “The Lion King Jr.” on Monday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 21, at 6 p.m. in the King Cafetorium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children and are available at the door.

The Lion King, the story of a young lion prince living in the African Pride lands, is known for its innovative costumes and puppetry by Julie Taymor. The original production won six Tony Awards in 1998, including one for Best Musical.

King students are excited to participate in a production that represents some of the linguistic and cultural diversity that is an important part of the King community. Native English-speaking students turned to their multilingual co-actors for support in learning the expressions in Swahili, Zulu, and Xhosa. Lionesses’ skirts were modeled after one that an actor brought when she moved from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Most of the tie-dyed fabric in the costumes was made and purchased in Ghana.

Off stage, many King Middle School students were involved in the production of the play during activity blocks and after school. Students assisted in creating papier-mâché props and costumes for the show, including zebras, giraffes, and lions.

In recent years, King’s drama club has had more than 100 students participating as actors and stagehands.
