Rock Around the WorldRock Around-the-World!

A sincere thank you to everyone who made this year's Rock Around the World a huge success! Held on March 12 at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, hundreds of supporters participated in international dancing, sampled international foods and helped raise funds for the Multilingual Department's summer school for English Language Learners. The Multilingual Summer Academic Program is a four-week intensive summer school for English Language Learners (ELLs). The goal of the pro-gram is to maintain and further develop English language reading, writing, listening, speaking, and comprehension skills gained during the school year. It is a hands-on, developmentally appropriate, and child-centered program with field experiences. The summer program for second-ary students focuses on academic English reading and writing, the English that one needs to excel in math, science, and social studies. To help students meet rigorous State and local standards, READ 180, a program for struggling readers, is used to accelerate the development of their literacy skills and vocabulary.

Volunteers Needed

Are you someone who would love to help plan an event that involves the song, dance and food of Portland’s multilingual and multicultural community? Then we need you! Rock Around the World, the Center’s annual fundraiser, proves each year to be an evening filled with energy and excitement, and we are always looking for help in pooling the communities resources to make this event one to remember. Soliciting items for a silent auction, finding food donations, and selling entrance tickets are just a few of the many ways to volunteer to make this event a success!

To get involved, please email Martha Royston at RoystM@PortlandSchools.org or call Martha at 207-874-8135 x 7816.
