Family Welcome Center Pre-K-12 Programs main page | Family Welcome Center | English Language Learning Program | Summer Programs | Multicultural Resource Library | Professional Development | Parent Outreach Helping Multilingual Families Register for School The Family Welcome Center offers support for multilingual families adjusting to a new city by assisting with registering their children for school. During the registration process (facilitated by interpreters when necessary), students and parents/guardians are interviewed to gather information regarding linguistic, cultural, and educational background. To determine eligibility for English language services, English language assessments are given to the student. Based on the results of these assessments, program placement recommendations are made and the parent/guardian has the right to accept or decline services offered. A school nurse evaluates the students’ vision, hearing, height, and weight and completes a family health history record. Health concerns are noted and communicated to the school and teachers as needed. Finally, when all appropriate information has been gathered and health clearance has been issued, appointments at appropriate schools and bussing arrangements are made. Center staff promptly delivers student files to the school and the student begins classes.
