Board Of Education
The Portland Public Schools is led by a school board of nine members all elected by popular vote. There are also 5 students representing Casco Bay, Deering and Portland high schools as well as the Portland Arts and Technology High School and Portland Adult Education.
Our Job
The Portland Board of Public Education is responsible for providing educational program for all of the students within our system. We do this primarily by establishing the policies that direct instructional and support programs within the system, and by employing a Superintendent to whom we give the authority and responsibility to supervise the effective implementation of those policies. It is not our duty to operate the schools, but to see that they are well operated.
Members of the board have authority only when acting as a school board legally in session. We cannot be bound in any way by an action or statement of one of our members acting alone, unless we have specifically instructed the person to act on our behalf.
Meetings & Materials
The School Board meets regularly on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Note – we do not convene in the month of July. The board may schedule special sessions as needed throughout the year. All board meetings are open to the public.
Agendas, minutes and Board policies are maintained on BoardDocs.
