DUTIES OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Members of the Committee have authority only when acting as a board legally in session.  The Committee shall not be bound in any way by any action or statement on the part of any individual Committee member except when such statement or action is in pursuance of specific instructions from the Committee.

 

The duties and obligations of an individual School Committee member may be considered as follows:

 

A.        To become familiar with the state school laws, regulations of the State Department of Education, and Portland Public Schools’ policies, rules, and regulations;

 

            B.        To become knowledgeable of educational aims, objectives, and policies of the system;

 

            C.        To work with other Committee members in a spirit of harmony and cooperation in spite of differences of opinion that may arise during vigorous debate on points at issue;

 

            D.        To base personal decisions upon all available facts in each situation; to vote honest convictions in every case, and thereafter, abide by and uphold the final majority decision of the Committee;

 

            E.         To represent the Committee and the Portland Public Schools to the public in such a way as to promote both interest and support; and

 

            F.         To refer complaints to proper school authorities.
