The School Committee, as an agent of the State, must operate within the bounds of state and federal laws affecting public education.  If the Committee is to meet its responsibilities to the residents of Portland, it must work for the passage of laws designed to advance the cause of excellence in education and for the repeal or modification of laws that impede that cause.  Therefore, the Committee will work with school boards associations and other concerned groups to achieve common legislative objectives.
