HEALTH EDUCATION

Health education for students in our modern society is very important in preparing young people to meet the realities of increasing social problems and health hazards.

Because Portland Public Schools share the responsibility for safe-guarding health, character, and personality development of students in the schools, the School Department shall establish and provide for a K-12 comprehensive health education curriculum which is aligned with all applicable state and federal standards as outlined in Maine Parameters of Essential Instruction, including all ten Comprehensive School Health Education content areas.

Health education shall be sequential, and integrated as an instructional component of the district curriculum, which shall provide students with knowledge and skills necessary to adopt healthy behaviors.  Health education shall be comprehensive, whereby students are taught about healthy choices in the classroom and through healthy school environments reinforcing the lessons.  Teachers who provide health education shall have appropriate training.
