Superintendent Letter Re: Resources for Support in Wake of Killing of Immigrant Father in Biddeford

On July 14, 2026, Superintendent Ryan Scallon and Portland Board of Public Education Chair Sarah Lentz wrote a letter to the PPS Community expressing their heartbreak concerning the July 13 fatal shooting of a young immigrant father by ICE agents in Biddeford. They also detailed resources that students, families and other community members can use for support in the wake of the incident. Read their letter:

July 14, 2026

Dear PPS Community:

We were heartbroken to learn of the killing of a young father by federal agents in Biddeford yesterday. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and community as they navigate this horrendous loss.

The impact of this incident is being experienced by people in different ways, and it follows numerous events over the past year that have raised many people’s stress and anxiety. For some members of our community, it further reinforces longstanding fears for their safety and that of their children. We want to remind you that there are resources available for those who need support in the wake of this incident or who are seeking help in addressing safety concerns. Here are a few:

●      This page on the PPS website offers many resources that offer help to families and educators who are supporting young people during times of crisis.

●      This page on our website provides information on PPS’ Safety Guidance and protocols related to immigration and non-local law enforcement actions.

●      We particularly want to call out these three resources to support conversations with children and youth:

○      Talking to Children About Violence

○      Talking to Youth When Scary Things Happen

○      When Children Are Afraid of a Parent’s Deportation

●      The Maine Immigrant Defense Hub provides a wealth of resources for immigrants and neighbors who support them. It also offers links to donate in support of families in need.

As we continue to process this unfathomable loss, we want you to know that the Portland Public Schools stands with all of our students, families, and staff. We will continue to do everything possible to create safe, welcoming, and supportive learning and work environments for all.

Sincerely,

Ryan Scallon, Ed.D.

Superintendent

Sarah Lentz

Chair, Portland Board of Public Education
