August 12, 2026

Dear Portland Public Schools Community,

Last night, the Board of Public Education held its first meeting of the 2026-27 school year, and I want to make sure everyone has the highlights. It was a full agenda, and I'm proud of the progress it reflects. Below is a rundown of what we shared, along with links to dig into the details yourself.

Strategic Plan: Building Real Momentum. We shared an update on where we stand in implementing our five-year strategic plan, and I'm genuinely encouraged by what our schools and departments have accomplished so far. From strengthening instruction to deepening family and community partnerships, the work is showing up in classrooms every day. There's more ahead, but we are moving in the right direction with a clear roadmap and a committed team.

Leadership and Central Office Structure. We also walked the Board through our current leadership and central office structure, including roles and responsibilities across departments. Having the right people in the right roles, working in unison, is foundational to everything else we want to achieve for students.

Back-to-School Preparations. The Board also received an update on our back-to-school preparations. Our teams have been hard at work all summer getting buildings, staff, and systems ready to welcome students back. We’re in a strong position heading into the new year. The first day of school for students in grades 1-12 is Monday, August 31, and for our Pre-K and Kindergarten students, the first day is Tuesday, September 1. Families should expect to receive their bus route information via ReachMyTeach by Friday, August 21.

Middle School Design and Facilities Update. We also updated the Board on our work to re-envision the middle school experience for our students, guided by the resolution the Board approved earlier this year. This is thoughtful, collaborative work, and we've been grateful for all in our community who've engaged in workgroups and listening sessions along the way. There's more input and design work ahead, and we're committed to getting this right for every middle schooler in Portland.

None of this happens without the dedication of our staff, the partnership of our families, and the trust of this community. We have real momentum, and I'm confident that by continuing to work together, we'll keep building on it throughout the year ahead.

Ryan Scallon
Superintendent, Ed.D.
