As part of the Portland Public Schools' strategic initiatives that focus on language development and support for multilingual learners, we are exploring a variety of program options, including dual language immersion programming, and are looking for community input.
We are currently contracting with the Center for Applied Linguistics to conduct an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) & Immersion Program Review. As part of this process, we are exploring the possibility of implementing a Spanish/English Dual Language Program at one of our elementary schools to expand opportunities for students to develop bilingual and biliteracy skills. To help us in this exploratory phase, we would like to gather input, gauge interest, and receive feedback from families and caregivers.
Dual Language programs typically begin in Kindergarten or first grade, so we are especially interested in hearing from families with young children who may be entering these grades in the coming years. Your insights will play a vital role in shaping the direction of this potential new program.
