DHS Seniors Explore Construction Careers

On Oct. 6, four seniors from Deering High School went on a field trip to West Bath for the first Maine Construction Career Day, hosted by Mid-Coast Excavation, Inc.

“All four students operated those big machines and we also got to spend lots of time talking to local construction, paving, electrical, ceiling and tile companies,” said Sydney Williams, Deering’s extended learning opportunities coordinator. She added, “We got to keep the hard hats.”

The students who participated were Carlos Adriano-Muaco, Narciso Massala, Celda Mouckala and Leonel Muaco.

Williams said the event hosted companies who are in need of workers and have programs in place to hire, train and pay while students are still in school. Apprenticeships were offered from the Maine Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program.

“Some of the companies we spoke to offered 'work while you learn' opportunities, internships, out-of-high-school jobs and other opportunities,” Williams said. She said companies involved included Lucas Tree, Crooker Construction, Dead River Company, ACE Painting & Acoustics, H.E. Callahan Construction, Tech Air, water utilities, Northeast Paving and Sebago Technics.

The Maine Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction says that "Maine Construction Career Days is an opportunity to increase career awareness in the construction and transportation industries through hands-on experience for all Maine high school students. We hope to hold this event annually and encourage all the students to ask questions and consider a great career in the construction and transportation industry through apprenticeships."
