Invitation to the High School Design Team / Workgroup High School Reenvisioning

The Portland Public Schools is inviting parents to join the High School Design Team to help reenvision our high schools to better meet the changing needs of our community.

Portland’s high schools have many wonderful features. We are rightly proud of much of what our schools are able to offer our diverse student body. All three of our general high schools have a rich set of traditions and unique characteristics.

At the same time, we all recognize that as we focus on creating equitable outcomes for all of our students, we have a responsibility to look deeply at our high schools and continue to evolve them to meet the changing needs of our community. As our enrollment plateaus, our aging buildings increasingly need repairs and renovations, resources continue to dwindle, and we continue to see disproportionate outcomes, we have additional reasons to take an in-depth look at our structures and practices to establish and grow efficient and effective programming for our students.

The Board’s recent resolution to direct us to develop closer alignment between our high schools reinforces and gives urgency, visibility, and accountability to efforts that have been underway among the administrative teams at all three schools, including PATHS, for the past six months.  The timing is right for us to expand membership and grow ownership for these efforts and that is why we write to you today.

We are seeking to engage parents to advance this reenvisioning work. It is important that we design schools that meet the needs of families. Below is more information about the Design Team and workgroup as well as how to sign up to participate.

Workgroup Goals and Expected Outcomes

Goal: All Portland Public Schools students will be prepared for college and career and empowered to pursue a productive postsecondary path.

Outcomes:

  1. Identify strengths and promising approaches at each of the three general high schools
  2. Make recommendations for increased alignment among the three schools for the 2023-2024 school year.

These workgroups will meet once a month during the 2022-2023 school year with the end goal of recommending ways in which our high schools can be better aligned in order to best serve students.  This year, the workgroups will focus specifically on scheduling alignment, ensuring a strong common 9th-grade experience, and ensuring consistent supports for multilingual learners. In subsequent years, we will work on special ed programming, school-wide support systems and structures, standards and diploma, and post-secondary support.
