A group of students at King Middle School has won a $500 Painting for a Purpose Grant for a cross-cultural learning “Our History” project. The goal of the project is to showcase different cultures through food, music and dance, art, language and geography through a Culture Day. The project is designed to be inclusive so all students can learn from it.
The project will have five phases:
● Food: Students will show how to make dishes from different countries
● Music/Dance: A dance teacher will teach students choreography and students will listen to music from all over the world
● Art: Students will create artwork associated with various countries
● Language: Students will learn how to say words in different languages
● Geography: Students can participate in a geography quiz
The grant will cover such costs as foods, art supplies and having the dance teacher work with students.
Painting for a Purpose is a local nonprofit organization founded by teachers. It brings creative people together to paint whimsical decorative items that they sell to raise money to fund service-learning projects led by Portland Public Schools students who want to make a difference. Students apply for the funding by writing grant proposals and can receive up to $500 to put their ideas into action.
