New Assistant Director of Special Services

The district has a new assistant director of student support services for secondary schools: Sharlee Mahoney. Shar, who started work on Aug. 22, will be introduced to the Portland Board of Public Education in September. She is joining our district from the Falmouth Public Schools, where she was a special education coordinator and instructional strategist across all grade spans.

Here's more about Shar:

Shar Mahoney, Assistant Director of Student Support Services, Secondary Schools: Shar has been a special educator since 2004, working with students of all ages and with a wide range of disabilities. She is joining the Portland Public Schools after serving for six years as the special education consulting teaching/administrator for Falmouth schools. In that role, Shar collaborated with providers across all disciplines. She participated in high profile legal cases, coached new and continuing contract staff, and worked extensively on truancy issues – thinking outside the box to bring at-risk students back into the school setting. During the COVID school closures, Shar oversaw all the special education remote learning for the district.

Shar has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. Joseph’s College and a master’s degree in special education from the University of Southern Maine. Recently, Shar completed her special education director internship through the Maine Education Consortium. She currently resides in Portland with her two children and Sheepadoodle. Shar believes that, given the right tools and support, all students can thrive in the public school setting. She knows that a committed staff working together can meet all students’ learning needs.
