Portland High School is excited to introduce Matt Bernstein as the school’s new head coach of Girls Soccer. Bernstein has been an assistant coach for the Boys Soccer team at Portland High for the last five years. “He brings a passion for soccer and a love for teaching high school students to the job,” said PHS Co-Curricular Director Lance Johnson.

Bernstein teaches humanities/social studies at Casco Bay High School and is the 2022 Cumberland County Teacher of the Year and also is a semifinalist for 2023 Maine Teacher of the Year. He is an outstanding ambassador for education, according to Casco Bay High School Principal Derek Pierce.

Bernstein is in his eighth year of teaching at Casco Bay. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Bowdoin College. He previously taught world history and U.S. history at The Greene School, an EL Education school in West Greenwich, Rhode Island.
