PPS Lauded for Digital Citizenship

The Portland Public Schools is proud to share that we have been officially recognized as a Common Sense District, a national honor awarded to school systems that demonstrate a strong, community‑wide commitment to digital citizenship and helping students thrive in today’s technology‑rich world.

This recognition—from Common Sense Education, a national nonprofit devoted to educating students and families on technology and its uses—reflects the work happening across our schools to ensure students learn how to use digital tools safely, responsibly, and creatively. From understanding online privacy to navigating media literacy and building healthy digital habits, PPS educators are helping students develop the skills they need to learn, connect, and participate confidently in a digital age.

In announcing the recognition, Common Sense Education said, “We applaud the faculty and staff of Portland Public Schools for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of students’ education. PPS deserves high praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to succeed in the 21st‑century workplace and participate ethically in society at large.”

PPS is honored to receive this distinction and grateful to our educators, staff, students, and families for helping build a culture where everyone plays a role in supporting safe and meaningful technology use.

As part of this recognition, PPS is invited to join Common Sense’s family engagement program, which offers tools, webinars, and monthly content to help parents and caregivers support digital well‑being at home.

Common Sense Education partners with districts across the country to provide research‑based resources for students, staff, and families. Their free K–12 curriculum—used in more than 80,000 schools nationwide—supports learning around internet safety, online reputation, media balance, cyberbullying prevention, and more.
