DISTRICT NEWS

FY27 budget logo On Course for Student Success

On March 10, Superintendent Ryan Scallon presented the proposed budget for the 2026-2027 school year. He started his presentation of the fiscal year 2027 (FY27) budget with a report of the improved outcomes for students the district has seen over the past two years of implementation of its five-year Strategic Plan—particularly for economically disadvantaged students, multilingual students learning English, and students with IEPs in reading and in math. The proposed budget aims to build on that progress while confronting fiscal challenges.

Middle School Update

At its March 10 meeting, the Board of Public Education held a first reading on its resolution to review the academic programming at our middle schools and potentially reconfigure our district’s three middle schools into two schools no later than the 2027-2028 school year. Based on the Board discussion, there are four areas of consideration that they are weighing: (1) continued improvement of the student experience and outcomes; (2) concentrating limited resources; (3) overall financial strain on the District; and (4) facilities needs and utilization.

New District Holiday in March

As a reminder, the Board of Public Education last year approved Yom Kippur (which was in October) and Eid al-Fitr as new district holidays. Eid, which marks the end of Ramadan, will fall on either Thursday, March 19, or Friday, March 20, this year (the exact date depends on local moon sightings). Either way, there will be no school for students on those two days. We will inform staff by midday on March 18 which of the two days will be a holiday for them and which will be a professional development day.

Explicitly teaching youth both skills and mindsets to use technology in a way that supports their well-being, rather than detracts from it, is vital in our ever-connected world. This is a part of PPS’ Digital Literacy and Well-Being curriculum.  Digital connections play a significant role in how young people build and maintain friendships with peers and loved ones. The American Psychological Association encourages youth to use technology for "social support, online companionship, and emotional intimacy that can promote healthy socialization." It is important to teach them the skills to communicate and think critically about how they interact when using technology affects their relationships. Thoughtful communication in the digital world is key to fostering, nurturing, and preserving vital relationships.
