The proposed $171.8 million FY26 school budget is headed to the City Council for a first read and public hearing on Monday, May 5, following approval by the Council's Finance Committee. This Council public hearing and another one on May 19 are opportunities for the PPS community to make their voices heard regarding this fair and responsible budget, which benefits students and supports educators.
A series of stakeholder engagement meetings will take place this month on a proposed policy that would ban students from having cell phones or other personal electronic devices on their person during regular school hours. The stakeholder engagement meetings are designed to get feedback from parents/guardians and staff on the policy before the Board of Public Education votes on it. Separate stakeholder meetings for high school students also are being scheduled by their individual schools.
Jackie Burris, a Foster Grandparent at East End Community School, and Fran Seeley, a Foster Grandparent at Talbot Community School, were recognized at the 2025 Governor's Awards for Service and Volunteerism ceremony last week. Burris won this year’s Outstanding National Service Volunteer award and Seeley also was honored for volunteering more than 500 hours over the past year.
In addition to voting on the school budget on June 10, Portland voters will also have the chance to vote on a vacant seat on the Portland Board of Public Education.Two candidates will be on the ballot June 10 to fill the vacant at-large seat on the Board: retired PPS music teacher Jayne Sawtelle and building contractor and PPS parent Cassidy LaCroix.
Portland High School is currently undergoing masonry repairs, precast repair and replacement, masonry cleaning and other facade restorations. Founded in 1821, Portland High School is the second oldest continuously operating public high school in the United States. The repairs are being completed using drone images to create 3D models and molds for the new stones that are being put in.
At its April 8 meeting, the Board of Public Education unanimously approved a 2025-2026 district calendar that includes Yom Kippur and Eid al-Fitr as new district holidays. Starting in the fall, students and staff at the Portland Public Schools, Maine’s most diverse school district, can observe those major religious holidays with their families without having to miss school.
On Monday, April 7, the Portland Public Schools Food Service department hosted a Field Trip: Culturally Connected, Plant-Forward School Meals: A Tour and Tasting at Portland Public Schools. This was an opportunity for other school districts and community members to come see how the Portland Public Schools is working with regional partners to bring more plant-forward and culturally connected meals to students.
The Casco Bay High School Mock Trial Team wishes to express their gratitude to four more generous members of Maine’s legal community for helping to sponsor the team’s trip to the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Phoenix, Arizona, May 7-11. “Thank you to the law firms of Perkins Thompson, Berman & Simmons and Mann Law, and also to the Maine Trial Lawyers Association,” said Jake McNally, Casco Bay math teacher and Mock Trial coach.
To make up for the two snow days the district has had so far (on Feb. 6 and Feb. 13), the current projected last day of school for students will be Tuesday, June 17, 2025, and the last teacher day will be Wednesday, June 18. Should we need to have a third storm day, those dates will be pushed back another day in June to make up for that. High School commencement ceremonies for the Portland Public Schools Class of 2025 will all take place at Merrill Auditorium. The district’s three high schools will hold their graduation exercises on June 4 and 5 and Portland Adult Education will hold its ceremony on June 25. Here are the details:

Portland High School art educator Elise Pelletier has been named 2025 Art Educator of the Year by the Maine Art Education Association (MAEA). In March, Pelletier attended the national Art Education Association convention in Louisville, Kentucky, where she received her award.
Each year, the University of Southern Maine’s Walter E. Russell Chair in Philosophy and Education honors a Deering High School educator who embodies the core values of the teaching profession – someone who ignites a passion for discovery in students, engages in the school’s ongoing life, and brings creativity and innovation to the classroom. This year’s honoree is special education teacher Margaret Hoyt.
The Southwestern Maine Activities Association (SMAA) held their annual Citizenship Banquet at the Italian Heritage Club early in April. Two Portland High School seniors, Anneliese Collin and Louis Thurston, were among students who received Citizenship Awards at the banquet.

An April 16, 2025, Spectrum News article about the Board of Public Education's April 8 vote to add the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur and the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr as holidays to the official school calendar, includes a reaction from a local rabbi who said she was “thrilled” to hear about the addition of the holidays. Sips, Sweets, and Stories, the spring fundraiser put on by the Portland Public Schools’ Multilingual and Multicultural Center, was a great success. The April 16 event raised nearly $5,000 to benefit the district’s award-winning Make It Happen program, a college-readiness and academic success initiative that equips multilingual students with the skills, confidence, and tools they need to prosper in school and beyond.
In an April 23, 2025, Maine Morning Star story about lawmakers trying to ensure that the already required teachings of Wabanaki and African American studies are effectively and accurately included in Maine school curricula, a PPS administrator explains the importance of such curricula. The Portland Public Library is featuring an exhibit with images, drawings, and sculptures created by Rowe Elementary third-graders during their art integration program in collaboration with Side x Side. The exhibit, which opened on April 11, is hung in the library’s Camden National Bank Community Gallery until June 20.

The annual PPS district-wide art show at City Hall is kicking off with a celebratory reception this Friday, May 2, in conjunction with the May First Friday Art Walk. The event will take place from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The exhibit will be on display until May 16, where you will be able to see student artwork from all the schools in the district on display.
Join us for a fun evening out for adults at Bunker Brewing Company for Spring for Teachers, a celebration of teaching and learning hosted by the Foundation for Portland Public Schools! Nominations are open for the 2025-2026 Maine School Nurse of the Year award, the Maine Association of School Nurses recently announced. The application deadline is May 16, 2025. This award recognizes a school nurse who demonstrates leadership in six areas of practice: care provision, program management, health education, professional development, community involvement, and research.
The City of Portland’s Sustainability Office and the Portland Parks Conservancy are co-hosting a citywide cleanup event on Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. until noon. The public is invited to help clean up local parks and communities at ‘The Great Portland Pickup.’ Join your neighbors for a fun morning of giving back and helping Portland shine!

LearningWorks: Hands-on STEAM focused program at East End and Rowe. This is a 6-week program from June 30 - August 7. It runs Monday - Thursday either 8:30am - 12:30pm or 9:30am - 1:30pm*. Contact is Zoe Costa (zcosta@learningworks.me) Learn more and apply.
The Foundation for Portland Public Schools (FPPS) is offering grants of up to $800 per person or up to $5,000 for teams of PPS staff to engage in curriculum planning, school team collaboration, or other summer work intended to advance new approaches to student learning or otherwise prepare for the upcoming school year. Applications became available April 1 and will be due Monday, May 5, 2025.
Mark your calendars! The Pride Portland Parade will be held on Saturday, June 21. The Portland Public Schools will continue its tradition, begun in 2015, of participating in the Pride Portland Parade to march for acceptance, equality, and inclusivity. Look for further details to be announced soon.
