New Head Coach for Field Hockey Team

Portland and Deering high schools on April 4 announced the hiring of a new head field hockey coach for the district’s co-op team: Kristin Rogers.

Coach Rogers was a member of the Portland High field hockey team as a player and has been the junior varsity coach of the Portland-Deering co-op team since 2015. Rogers’ coaching experience also includes four years of coaching field hockey at Greeley High School and 10 years coaching the Portland-Deering girls ice hockey team.

Portland High Co-Curricular Director Lance Johnson said Portland and Deering high schools are excited about the hire. “We are fortunate to have such an experienced, organized, and caring coach to work with our field hockey team,” Johnson said. “Kristin is a dedicated educator who has high expectations for our student-athletes. Through involvement in field hockey, she hopes to inspire student-athletes to a happier, more successful future.”

Rogers currently works as the community school coordinator at Talbot Community School in Portland. She previously taught social studies at Portland High School for seven years and worked two years at the REAL School on Mackworth Island.

The Portland Public Schools is Maine’s largest school district, with approximately 6,500 students, and is also the most diverse. About one-third of the district’s students come from homes where languages other than English are spoken—a total of more than 50 languages. 49.8 percent of the district’s students are white and 50.2 percent are students of color. Approximately half of PPS students qualify for free or reduced-price school meals.
