PPS Retirees Honored June 6

More than 40 Portland Public Schools retiring employees were honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and the district in a ceremony on Tuesday, June 6. Those recognized have served throughout the district and held a wide variety of roles in service of our students and families. The 2022-2023 school year retirees include administrators, teachers, educational technicians, administrative assistants and secretaries, transportation employees, custodians, a guidance counselor, a speech therapist, a payroll manager, an academic enrichment specialist and the district’s facilities director. The retirees have collectively given nearly 1,000 years of dedicated service to the Portland Public Schools.

“What an accomplishment!” Interim Co-Superintendents Aaron Townsend and Melea Nalli told the retirees at the ceremony. “At PPS, one of our four goals of our strategic plan, the Portland Promise, is People. Our shared commitment with this goal is to attract, support and retain talented and diverse people who use their strengths to achieve our shared goals. This year’s cohort of retirees is a great reflection of the incredible People we have in the district.”

Retirees’ supervisors gave a brief presentation about each one. Retirees also received a retirement gift from the district.

“Thank you to all of our retirees,” the co-superintendent said. “We are so grateful for your service and we are honored to recognize you this evening. We wish you the best in the next chapter of your lives!”

The retirees’ length of service ranges from three years to 38 years. Most are retiring now, some retired earlier this school year and a few may continue with the district for a short time before formally leaving. The ceremony was an opportunity to formally recognize the retirees as a group.
