‘Big Night’ Is Around the Corner!

As the weather warms and maple sugaring winds down, we are about to hear the first nocturnal sounds of peepers and  wood frogs filling the air – reminding us that spring is here! Yes, It is nearly BIG NIGHT, the first warm (above 40+ degrees), rainy spring night,  which results in amphibian migration all across the region.  Salamanders and frogs travel up to a quarter mile and have a 1 in 5 chance of being hit by a car as they traverse the wet roads to their breeding grounds. Here’s information and resources for those that want to learn more or get involved:

  • Get your flashlight out and walk outside (near vernal pools, sidewalks, or roads) and see if you can see any salamanders or frogs! Learn more about vernal pools: https://www.vernalpools.me/
  • Try NOT to drive on the first warm rainy spring nights or be very careful, as amphibians will be on the roads. Let’s do our small part to protect the lives of these vernal pool beings!
  • Get involved this year with Maine BIG NIGHT: https://mainebignight.org
