DLL PreK Teachers Learn about Guided Drawing Strategy

Cathy Jurgelevich, district PreK dual language learner (DLL) teacher, shared the following concerning guided drawing:

Former Portland Public Schools teacher, Dr. Christina Cassano, recently met with Portland's DLL PreK teachers to discuss her new book, "Guided Drawing with Multilingual Preschoolers: Developing Language, Vocabulary, and Content Knowledge."

DLL teachers read the book and invited the former first-grade Reiche Elementary School teacher to a Zoom meeting to ask questions. "After reading the book, DLL teachers are looking forward to putting the strategies talked about in the book into practice in the PreK classrooms this spring," Jurgelevich said. "For example, in our last unit we are learning about Things That Grow. We are looking to build in the drawing for the PreK students to make connections with parts of a plant and other objects. We also learned how to help our students overcome internal doubts when drawing. Finally, guided drawing has also been shown to have a strong connection to strengthening the oral language within teaching units (PreK for ME). If you have any questions or would like more information please feel free to contact a DLL teacher."
