Peaks Island School Hosts Its First Annual STEAM Exploration Night!

On June 1, Peaks Island Elementary School held its first annual STEAM Exploration Night. The event featured a wide range of hands-on experiences for PreK-5th grade students, their families and the island community. Great tools such as micro:bits, Little Bits, circuit boards, Ozobots, Legos, Bee-Bots, circuit sensor paper, recycled resources and various coding apps were provided in hopes of inspiring curiosity and discovery for all ages. Peaks Island Elementary librarian and "STEAMer'' Bridget Joyce personally led attendees through a multitude of teaching and learning activities to help create a space for students to showcase new skills and knowledge that they had acquired throughout the school year. Included among students' creations was a miniature replica of the Casco Bay Lines’ Machigonne ferry that third graders programmed to commute between Peaks Island and Portland using a detailed map of Casco Bay they had painted themselves. Fourth and fifth graders programmed bots to play riveting games of hockey or basketball. This spirited evening of innovation was considered a success!
