School has started and we are asking drivers to respect the flashing lights of school buses. Student safety depends on it!
Every week, numerous cars pass our buses when the flashing lights are on – this includes when buses are stopped in front of our schools and when they are picking up/dropping off kids in their neighborhoods.
Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. You should slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle.
Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. You must stop your vehicle and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving, before you start driving again. Under Maine law, drivers who pass a school bus can be fined and have their licenses suspended.
