Students To Be Recognized for Earning Seal of Biliteracy
The annual Seal of Biliteracy Recognition Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 20, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Casco Bay High School. This is the seventh year this event is being held.
The Portland Board of Public Education, representing Maine’s largest and most diverse school district, established the Seal of Biliteracy in the fall of 2017 to promote the attainment of functional proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. The first awards were presented to students in May 2018.
The Portland Public Schools was the first school district in Maine to present those awards. In 2018, the Maine Department of Education announced that the state also would award students a Seal of Biliteracy.
Proficiency in multiple languages is increasingly important for effective participation in political, social, and business contexts in our global world. In addition, the Seal of Biliteracy makes a statement to students, parents and community members who speak a language other than English at home that it’s important to maintain the language of our parents’ homeland and culture. The PPS community is invited to attend the award celebration to congratulate students and learn more about the Seal of Biliteracy.
