FAFSA Information Night Nov. 19

In collaboration with The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), Parent University is hosting an event all about the FAFSA application process on Wednesday, November 19, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Deering High School. Guided by higher education financial experts, come learn more about the financial options available to students on their path to college success!

Board Incumbents Re-Elected

Three current Board of Public Education members whose seats were up for election Nov. 4 have each won new three-year terms. They faced no opposition on the ballot. Board members Sarah Lentz and Jayne Sawtelle were returned to their at-large seats, and Board member Julianne Opperman was re-elected to her District 3 seat.

The Foundation for Portland Public Schools (FPPS) has awarded more grants than ever before in its almost 20-year grant-making history. For the first time, FPPS awarded grants of up to $2,000 via three different grant programs. 135 grants totaling $144,554 will benefit students across 17 schools in the district this school year.

Casco Bay and Deering high schools were among 78 schools across Maine participating in the Maine Student Mock Election on Oct. 28. It is the first year that Maine has held a student mock election for a referendum election — and Casco Bay was one of the schools that Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows visited that day to mark the event.

King Middle School science teacher Marina Peñalver shared the following account of an “Engineering Our Energy Future,” expedition that King eighth-graders are engaging in: "In this expedition, Matinicus Eight students become authorities on one of our planet’s major dilemmas, human energy usage and its connection to global climate change.

RECOGNITIONS

Reiche Elementary School is the latest of three newly renovated Portland Public Schools elementary schools to attain Silver Certification from LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Presumpscot and Longfellow schools were awarded the certification last year. The certification recognizes the schools’ lower energy costs, improved air quality and healthier learning environments overall.

Author Talk for Kids at Portland Library to Feature Guide Dog in Training

On Saturday, Nov. 8, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., youngsters are invited to the launch of author Gail Donovan's new middle-grade novel, “Sparrow, Always,” in the Children's Library section of the Portland Public Library, downtown branch. Donovan will be joined by Clifford, a future guide dog with Guiding Eyes! At this event, kids can listen to the author read from “Sparrow, Always,” her third book about the "endearingly energetic" fourth-grader Sparrow Robinson.

Elementary School Book Fair at Back Cove Books

Mark your calendars! Back Cove Books will be hosting an in-store book fair featuring a wide variety of books, journals, stickers and more for kids of all ages—all to benefit the elementary schools of the Portland Public Schools! The book fair will be on Tuesday, November 11, from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM. During the in-store book fair, 20% of every purchase will be donated back as store credit for the classrooms and libraries of the Portland elementary school of your choice!
