Spring 2024 Results: Last spring, Portland Public Schools students in grades 3-8 and grade 10 took a state standardized test called the Maine Through Year Assessment in math and reading. On Thursday, Sept. 12, the district will share students’ individual scores from that spring test with their families via ReachMyTeach.
The Board of Public Education on Aug. 20 appointed the 14 members of PPS' new Community Advisory Committee on Attendance Boundaries for PreK-8 Schools.
Join us on Saturday, Sept. 21, in celebrating the completion of our Buildings for our Future (BFOF) renovation projects at Presumpscot, Longfellow and Reiche elementary schools!
Kate Hersom has been selected as the new assistant director of Portland Adult Education, with a start date this fall.
Emily Wells, a Lyman Moore Middle School mentor teacher who has served on the school’s leadership team, is now the school’s new assistant principal. The Board of Public Education voted Sept. 3 to approve her one-year appointment to that role.
The entire PPS employee community gathered together on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in Merrill Auditorium to launch the 2024-2025 school year as one team, generating energy, inspiration, and a shared sense of belonging. The All Staff Welcome event also included a foundational overview of the district’s new strategic plan and priorities for the new school year.
School has started and we are asking drivers to respect the flashing lights of school buses. Student safety depends on it!
Every week, numerous cars pass our buses when the flashing lights are on – this includes when buses are stopped in front of our schools and when they are picking up/dropping off kids in their neighborhoods.
The Maine Department of Education (DOE) is conducting a targeted review of general-purpose aid for local schools through the state’s Essential Programs and Services (EPS) Funding Formula.

Maine Audubon, with help from the Maine Association for New Americans, recruited 12 teens to help us learn about and plant species from the K-5 Wabanaki Studies curriculum at PPS elementary schools.
Computers were still pretty new in 1980, but Portland High School was making sure even then that students knew how to use this new technology.

Sept. 5 was the first day of school for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. To quell any first-day nervousness, Reiche Elementary School held an open house and practice bus ride for kindergartners on Sept. 4.
EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES
The Foundation for Portland Public Schools has a message for PPS staff: Applications for its Fall Equity and Innovation Grants Program and its new Co-Curricular Grants Program are open. Deadline is Oct. 2.
Here’s a message from Greater Portland Council of Governments (GPCOG): “We're recruiting multilingual volunteers—Bus Ambassadors—to teach new Mainers how to use public transportation.
On Sept. 21, the Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS) will be hosting the school's first annual car show to raise funds for PATHS students to participate in SKILLSUSA!
What initiatives does ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) funding support? How does ESSA rate schools? How can families give input on their state’s ESSA plan? Get engaged in this discussion and learn the answers to all of these questions, and more, in this Parent University event on Sept. 18.
Come join us as we celebrate the start of the school year with our annual Back to School Fair for multilingual families! The event will be held at East End Community School from 1-4pm on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Join us at Presumpscot Elementary School on Sept. 24 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for an informative workshop led by University of New England professor Dr. Audrey Bartholomew.
Maine Startup Challenge is a business plan competition with four tiers (K-8, High School, College, and Open) to encourage entrepreneurial thinking across all ages in Maine. The top two ideas in each tier win cash prizes!
