Schools Celebrate Read Across America Day

Read Across America Day, an annual national celebration of reading, was on March 2. Here are some of the activities on Read Across America Day that we were shared by PPS Schools:

Rowe Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day with 20 “Celebrity Readers” visiting all the school’s classrooms. Rowe is especially thankful to its Portland Public Schools readers: Rowe Principal Jeesca Steele; Rowe kitchen manager Rosetta Iannsccone; Rowe head custodian Mark Madison; Rowe gifted and talented teacher Michelle Amato; PPS STEM coordinator Brooke Teller; PLBSS coordinator Carol Ridlon; PEA President Kerrie Dowdy; Portland Board of Education member Julianne Opperman and Lincoln Middle School Principal Marisa Ayala.

For Read Across America Day, East End Community School welcomed Russell Hewey, a ballet master, who read “When Langston Dances” by Kaija Langley to students in kindergarten through grade 2; and Mihku Paul, Executive Editor of Dawnland Voices, visited third through fifth-grade classrooms for Wabanaki storytelling.
