CBHS Freshmen's Essays Recognized in Statewide Writing Contest

Sebastian Milstein-Jones, a grade 9 student at Casco Bay High School, took second place in the grades 9-12 category in the second annual statewide Student Writing Contest in which students write about the positive impact of teachers upon their lives.

In addition, Shukri Ibrahim, also a freshman at Casco Bay, won honorable mentionable mention in the same grades 9-12 category.

The contest is put on by the Maine County and State Teachers of the Year Association (MCSTOYA), in partnership with the Maine Council of English Language Arts (MCELA). The writing prompt this year was: “Share about a teacher who made a positive difference in your day, week, year, or life.”

Sebastian wrote about Lincoln Middle School English teacher Peter Casasa-Blouin or “Mr. C-B.” Read Sebastian's moving essay about this inspirational teacher HERE. Shukri wrote about how Mr. Smith at Lincoln Middle School inspired her to do her best in her heartfelt essay HERE.

“The Student Writing Contest aims to lift students’ voices in recognizing teachers’ impact on their lives in ways both small and large,” MCSTOYA and MCELA said in a joint statement. “In only our second year, the submissions exceeded our expectations. We are touched by the stories of caring and supportive teachers from across our state and from every grade span.”
