This year, in all but one elementary and middle school, the district launched a high quality ELA curriculum called EL Education. This curriculum provides teachers with grade-level lessons, texts, and assessments to ensure rigorous content and engaging topics for all students. EL Education's mission is to provide opportunities for all students to achieve excellent equitable outcomes, and therefore is already very aligned with Portland's vision and mission. We also adopted the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) Skills Program in all schools, which teaches K-2 students the decoding skills needed for future independent reading. This program, along with the EL Education curriculum, is aligned to the body of knowledge known as the Science of Reading. We're excited that all students have access to research-based curricula to ensure that all students learn to read and can be successful in high school and beyond.
