On Wednesday, March 14, at 10 a.m., a 17-minute National School Walkout has been called in response to the tragic shootings at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. Because the Portland Public Schools are closed today due to the weather, Portland students will observe the walkout at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 15.

The Portland Public Schools will allow this student-led activity to be held. Our high schools and middle schools will permit their students’ participation in a brief intermission during the school day on March 15 to exercise their free speech rights with regard to the issue of school violence.

This will be an opportunity for all students to express their views on the subject of school safety, in a peaceful and orderly manner without disrupting the school day. No students will be pressured by the schools to participate if they choose not to or to support a particular point of view.

Superintendent Xavier Botana has written a letter to families discussing the district’s decision regarding the walkout. The letter is on the Portland Public Schools’ website and can be read HERE

Students will remain on school property during the walkout and the events are not open to the general public.
