King Middle School students will gain a deeper understanding about immigration to the United States when the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services naturalizes 46 candidates for citizenship during a ceremony at the school on Friday, Jan. 18.

King Middle School Principal Caitlin LeClair and Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana will provide welcoming remarks at the 9 a.m. ceremony. Maine’s new governor, Janet Mills, will deliver the keynote address. King students and staff, the new citizens and their families and invited guests will be attending.

Friday's ceremony will be an exciting and authentic component of the Moxie seventh-grade team's fall expedition, called Coming to America. During this interdisciplinary unit, students have investigated the history, current issues, and impact of immigration in the United States. Students engaged in diverse fieldwork experiences, including hearing from Portland High School immigrants, learning from the state refugee coordinator with Catholic Charities, discussing current immigration issues with the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project and interviewing new Mainers about their immigration experiences.

Students then connected the themes of the interviews with content they learned in their classes and created a narrative of their interviewee's journey to the U.S. In conjunction with their narratives, the students created quilt squares inspired by the journey of each person. These will be on display at the naturalization ceremony.

The 46 citizenship candidates originate from the following 31 countries: Armenia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burundi, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, El Salvador, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Iraq, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Somalia, South Korea, United Kingdom and Vietnam.
