Portland High School junior Brian McGowen has won a Painting for a Purpose (PFP) grant of nearly $500 for his school for a project to provide graphic tablets to students with different learning needs.

Brian identified an issue of students with different learning needs getting distracted by the messiness of pen and paper, making them unable to concentrate on the actual learning task. He knew other Portland High School students have similar distractions and he felt strongly that working with graphic tablets could immediately eliminate this obstacle.

The PFP grant of $479.95 will enable Portland High School to purchase graphics tablets for the art department. Brian will be directly involved with teaching this technology to other students.

Painting For A Purpose celebrates the power of art to bring people together and the power of young people to improve their schools and communities. PFP does this by encouraging the civic engagement of young people and supporting them in putting their good ideas into action. PFP offers grants of up to $500 to K-12 students in the Portland Public Schools. All grants must be youth-led service learning grants and written by students.
