The Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana this week recognized Lincoln Middle School science teacher Christel Driscoll for being a “superhero teacher.”

The recognition took place at the Board’s April 23 meeting.

Driscoll was specially selected in March by the Dole Food Company for her dedication to teaching youth about the importance of health and nutrition. As part of Dole’s “Powering the HERO Within” campaign with Caption Marvel, Driscoll was one of three national “superheroes” Dole chose to recognize on International Women’s Day on March 8, which coincided with the release of the Captain Marvel movie. Part of Driscoll’s award was a shipment of bananas, pineapples and Dole kids' cookbooks for her classroom.

Driscoll’s role as sustainability science teacher at Lincoln Middle School includes managing the Lincoln Cooking Club, which helps students discover their culinary side and the importance of eating more sustainably for better nutrition and environmental health. The Club is part of the Cooking Matters Maine program, which provides students with hands-on cooking and nutrition classes to show them how to prepare healthier alternatives of their favorite foods. “Christel is clearly a standout teacher,” Botana said. “She engages her students in STEM learning, through such activities as having a visiting engineer conduct a fun engineering design competition in her classroom, and by taking students to Augusta for a Maine DEP hearing regarding greenhouse gas emissions.”

Botana also noted that among her other accomplishments, Driscoll was part of a team of three Lincoln teachers who were finalists in the inaugural 2016 STEM Education Innovation Challenge Grant Competition. The team won a $2,000 grant to implement their innovative wind-powered kinetic sculpture proposal in the classroom.

“Congratulations to this superhero teacher,” Botana said.
