A ceremonial groundbreaking for the renovation/expansion of Lyseth Elementary School is scheduled for Friday, June 14, the last student day of school this year. The ceremony will run from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with students and city and school officials taking part. Portland Public Schools families and community members are invited to attend.
The Lyseth project, which will add a separate gym with a stage, a new library and upgrades to the school’s entrance and administrative space, is expected to be completed by 2021.
Portland voters in November 2017 passed a $64.4 million bond to renovate Lyseth, Longfellow, Presumpscot and Reiche elementary schools. Lyseth has been designated as the first school to be renovated, with a total cost pegged at about $16.5 million.
