Portland Adult Education (PAE) will host its graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 27, at 6 p.m., at Merrill Auditorium for 53 students who attained high school diplomas and the 48 students who passed the HiSET test (formerly GED).

PAE graduates can range in age from their late teens to senior citizens. They haven’t followed the usual path to high school graduation for reasons that can include disability, working full-time to support their families, coming to a new country where they didn’t speak the language, homelessness and war. Sometimes, PAE students have already completed high school or college, but in another country and language. They all share a determination to succeed.

The following students will speak at the graduation ceremony:

Axels Samuntu

Samuntu, 29, is PAE’s first student representative on the Portland Board of Public Education. Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and educated as a medical doctor, he received his Emergency Medical Technician Certificate at Southern Maine Community College, but continued to study at PAE to strengthen his English. He also is CEO of the Axels Samuntu Foundation, which focuses on human rights in relation to health. He currently is employed as a house manager at Port Resources, working with people with disabilities.

Ahmed Hameed

Ahmed, 30, waited for 38 months to come to the United States as a refugee from Iraq. During the past two years, while working full time, Ahmed has earned a diploma and served as a volunteer in PAE’s learning lab. In addition, he has successfully prepared to attend Southern Maine Community College next fall. Ahmed will describe how the welcome he received in Maine has propelled him to achieve his goals.
