The Portland Public Schools values its bus drivers and appreciates all they do to ensure that students arrive at school safely and on time, in all kinds of weather. To show its appreciation, the district is inviting its transportation staff to a free bowling event on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Bayside Bowl.

Bayside Bowl will provide approximately 50 transportation employees, including bus drivers and other transportation staff, with six lanes and shoes – all for free. The Foundation for Portland Public Schools secured the generous gift from Bayside.

With labor shortages nationally, some school districts are having trouble finding bus drivers. Over the past year, Portland Public Schools has been working to make working for the district more attractive by increasing hours and providing growth opportunities.

Superintendent Xavier Botana commended district Transportation Director Eric Wood for spearheading the event and thanked Bayside Bowl for its generosity.  “Our school bus drivers and other transportation staff are a vital part of our team. This is a great example of the team building that Eric is working on in our Transportation Department,” Botana said. “We are most grateful to Bayside Bowl for its willingness to support this work and to the Foundation for Portland Public Schools for helping make this event possible.”

Wood said the afternoon of bowling is a fun way for transportation staff to build rapport as they prepare for the start of school. Students in grades 1-12 start school Sept. 3 and students in pre-K and kindergarten begin Sept. 5.
