The Portland Public Schools High School Orchestra performed at a Citizenship Ceremony held Sept. 17 at the University of Southern Maine’s Hannaford Hall. “This was the 35th ceremony performed by our High School Orchestra in 18 years!” said district Orchestra Director Julianne Eberl.

She said Gov. Janet Mills was the keynote speaker at the ceremony, at which 99 new citizens from 33 countries were sworn in as new American citizens. “Our students did us all proud, and with just one rehearsal,” Eberl said. “They played 40 minutes of welcome music as guests arrived. Then, as part of the ceremony, they performed “The Star Spangled Banner,” “America” (My Country Tis of Thee), and “America the Beautiful.”

The student performers included: Deven Abrams, Vivica Dunlap, Lilliana Frantz, Graham Ganter, Andrew Jasonides, Audrey Leavitt, Cassandra Lerch, Isabela Muldoon, Glynis O'Meara, and Johnny Sylvain.
