A new regional conference, titled “Beyond Borders: Migration and Integration,” will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, at the University of Southern Maine.

The focus of the daylong conference, put on by the Portland Public Schools Multilingual and Multicultural Center, is on immigration and the refugee experience as a two-way process. That process is based on mutual accommodation and a recognition that successful migration includes full participation in economic, social, cultural and political life,

Renowned journalist Tom Gjelten, author of “A Nation of Nations: A Great American Immigration Story,” will give the keynote address. His topic will be: A Promise fulfilled: How American Became an Immigrant Nation. His talk will be followed by breakout sessions devoted to three themes: America as a Refuge, Immigrant Economic Power and Access, and Education and Integration.

The 18 breakout sessions at the conference will cover a wide range of topics under those themes. For example, the sessions include “Immigration Law Basics and Recent Developments: Impact on Students;” “Powered by Immigrants: The American Entrepreneurial Spirit;” “Epigenetics: The Transmission and Inheritance of Trauma;” “The Immigration Debate and The Compassionate Stance;” “Achievement Gap or Education Debt? Understanding Inequity in the Classroom;” “It’s Just Good Business: Diversity and Inclusion in the Workforce;” and “Math for Agency: Decolonizing Curriculum.”

The more than 200 registered attendees will be from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, and include educators, law enforcement, policy makers, entrepreneurs, business leaders, members of community based organizations and other community members. Registration is now closed.
