Both Casco Bay High School and the Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS) will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 20, as the Portland Police Department investigates a threat made on social media against some Casco Bay students on the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 19.

The Portland Public Schools has been working with Portland police since then, but as of now, the person making the threat has not been identified.  As a result, Superintendent Xavier Botana has decided to cancel school on Wednesday, Nov. 20, as a cautionary measure at both Casco Bay and PATHS to give police time to complete their investigation. PATHS is included because both schools share the same campus.  No threats were made against PATHS students.

The threat was specifically directed at about 20 Casco Bay students through social media near the end of the school day on Tuesday. A student alerted school authorities. Students were dismissed at the normal time without the need for a lockdown. Portland police were immediately notified and have launched an investigation.

“This is another great example of Portland students doing the right thing by notifying faculty to a possible threat,” said Casco Bay Principal Derek Pierce.

Pierce encouraged students to use Wednesday to continue to work on meeting or exceeding standards before the trimester ends next week before the Thanksgiving holiday. He said teachers will provide updates on Google Classroom or other means.

No further details are available at this time as the investigation continues. If anyone has any information that would help in this investigation, they are being asked to call the Portland Police Department at (207) 874-8575.
