The Deering High School Debate Team continued its successful run with wins at tournaments on Dec. 7 and Nov. 23. The team's success comes on the heels of a sweep the team made at another tournament on Nov. 9.

The Dec. 7 Maine Forensic Association (MFA) event took place at Poland Regional High School. Deering's individual team of seniors Glynis O'meara and Aidan Reid finished first – "for the third  tournament in a row!" said Brian Dodge, Deering math teacher and the team’s coach.

The Nov. 23 event took place at Lawrence High School in Fairfield. Deering individual teams of seniors Glynis O’Meara and Aidan Reid; junior Aidan Blum-Levine and sophomore Linh Nguyen; and sophomores Balqies Mohamed and Emily Cheung competed in the Public Forum category and took home trophies for first, third and fourth respectively. “Their combined success propelled Deering into second place overall for the tournament!” Dodge said.

The team also swept the Falmouth Speech and Debate tournament on Nov. 9. The Deering team competed in Public Forum and Lincoln/Douglas-Style Debate.

In that competition, the teams of Glynis O’Meara and Aidan Reid; Aidan Blum-Levine and Linh Nguyen; and Balqies Mohamed and Emily Cheung finished first, second and third respectively.

“I’ve never seen one single school sweep three spots in an event in the six years I’ve coached this team,” Dodge said, after the Nov. 23 win. “Each individual competitor/partnership is awarded points based on placement in the tournament, and all of our competitors’ scores combined to give us second place in Debate overall. They are amazing students and have worked very hard to get where they are!”

This is not the first year the Deering Debate Team has racked up awards – the team has distinguished itself in tournament after tournament. “Deering Debate has consistently improved every year I've coached them,” Dodge said. “I'm incredibly proud of our team.”

Among other trophies, the Deering Debate Team has won three individual state championships over the past six years.
