The Portland Board of Public Education held a ceremony on Dec. 2, to inaugurate its newest members. The board also formally voted to approve Roberto Rodriguez to be Board chair again for the coming year.

Sworn in at the ceremony at City Hall were newly elected District 3 Board member Adam Burk and two Board members who were re-elected in the Nov. 5 election: at-large representatives Roberto Rodriguez and Anna Trevorrow. Burk replaces District 3 Board member Laurie Davis, who stepped down after nine years of service on the Board.

Also sworn in were four student representatives to the Board: Stephanie Brown, representing Portland High School; Fabio Caciel-Reyes, representing Casco Bay High School; Sahar Habibzai, representing Deering High School; and Mangasa Magalie Yangala, representing Portland Adult Education. A fifth student, Sam Parrott, representing the Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS), was not able to attend the ceremony.

Rodriguez has served as board chair since last December. At a caucus at its Nov. 26 meeting, the Board informally decided to have him continue to fill that role for another year. Board members confirmed that decision with their Dec. 2 vote.
