This is the image for the news article titled Riverton Name Change Community Meeting Jan. 30Members of the Riverton Elementary School community are invited to a community meeting to discuss a proposal to rename Riverton Elementary School for one of Portland’s most cherished and respected community leaders: Gerald E. Talbot. The meeting will take place at the school, located at 1600 Forest Avenue, on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 4 p.m.

Mr. Talbot is an educator, author, historian, civil and human rights activist, founding president of the Portland branch of the NAACP and the first African American elected to Maine’s Legislature.

At its Jan. 21 meeting, the Portland Board of Public Education held a first reading and workshop on the proposal to rename Riverton for Mr. Talbot.
