Lincoln Middle School seventh-grader Rose Bolduc won the Cumberland County Spelling Bee on Feb. 10. The runner-up was Ezra Lee, a seventh-grader at Lyman Moore Middle School, according to a Portland Press Herald story.

Lincoln English teacher Antona Briley described the exciting contest, which also included Lincoln student Shay Rosenthal. The bee, held in Yarmouth, began with 18 spellers from nine schools, the Press Herald said.

“Shay Rosenthal and Rose Bolduc were strong competitors, and had to spell words such as ‘firmament,’ ‘extinguish’, ‘cognizant’ and ‘Connemara,’” Briley said. “Both Shay and Rose made it through 12 rounds, but it was Rose who continued on through 21 rounds of spelling! When she correctly spelled her final word, ‘attributive,’ she earned the title of Cumberland County Spelling Champion. She will advance on to the Maine State Spelling Bee in March. Thanks to both Shay and Rose for representing Lincoln so well, and congratulations, Rose!”

Rose placed third in last year’s county bee. She will now compete at the Maine State Spelling Bee March 21 at Hannaford Hall at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.
