The Portland Public Schools family is invited to (virtually) cheer on a team from Portland High School when Season 4 of the Maine High School Quiz Show launches tonight, Thursday, April 2. Portland’s team is one of four competing in a doubleheader.

The Maine Public Television event will air at 8 p.m. and be shown again on Sunday, April 5, at 9 p.m.  The line-up is John Bapst High School vs. Brewer High School and Portland High School vs.. Gould Academy.

The quiz is a televised scholastic game show, with teams fielding questions on topics that include world affairs, science and technology. 16 schools are competing for a $1,000 first prize to go toward Project Graduation, or other appropriate use as determined by the winning school’s administration.

The quiz is set up in a single-elimination knockout format. The winner of each match moves on to the next round of competition while the losing team is eliminated from further competition for that season. The season is comprised of eight regular games, four quarterfinals, two semifinals and the championship. (The two teams that make it to the championship will have played 3 games prior.)
