This is the image for the news article titled FY21 School Budget ApprovedPortland residents at the polls July 14 validated the Portland Public Schools’ $119.9 million budget for fiscal year 2021 by a margin of more than 6 to 1. According to unofficial results from the office of the City Clerk, the vote to validate the budget was 16,241 in favor, or 86.41 percent, and 2,555 opposed, or 13.59 percent.

Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana issued the following statement in response:

“Thank you, Portland voters, for overwhelmingly approving our school budget for the 2020-2021 school year. I am proud to live in a community that consistently demonstrates its belief in the importance and value of public education. The budget was a responsible one that was unanimously endorsed by the Portland Board of Public Education and the City Council. It represents an effort to balance the needs of our students with the economic uncertainties brought on by the COVID-19 crisis to many in our community. This FY21 budget does not raise taxes, yet advances the district’s Equity goal by adding two more pre-kindergarten classes, an autism spectrum disorder program for high school students and investing in our math and literacy curriculums.

Thanks to the Portland community’s support for our schools, we can now move forward and focus all our energies on our intensive planning for a safe return to learning this fall.”
