In a recent Facebook post, Maine Gov. Janet Mills used a message and drawing sent to her by a Rowe Elementary School third-grader to underscore the need to work together to combat COVID-19.

In the July 15 post, Mills noted that Maine was “only one of two states that is reporting a decline in cases. That is, of course, welcome and encouraging news. But I want to be clear: it cannot be cause for celebration, as much as we want it to be. We have to remind ourselves that this deadly virus is still here, that it is lurking in our communities, and when it takes hold, it can spread dangerously fast. The best thing Maine people can do for our health and for our economy is to stay vigilant. The worst thing we could do is let our guard down now.”

Mills then referred to the Rowe student’s message. Mills wrote: “Gracie, a third grader in Portland summed it up well when she wrote to me (with a great drawing) recently, “I know your job is really hard. We will all help you along the way.” Let us follow Gracie’s lead. Let us continue to all help each other along the way. That is how we will get through this together.”
